Sunset FC women win Charity Shield
- Updated: 31 October 2016
Last season’s champion women’s football team, Sunset FC, picked up where they left off, as they hoisted the CIFA Women’s Charity Shield on Sunday, 30 October, 2016 with a 1-0 win over Scholars International.
The match pitted winners of the 2015-16 league and the FA Cup, Sunset FC, against league runners-up, Scholars International. Both sides started the game at the Ed Bush Sports Complex with purpose but it quickly became clear that they were evenly matched after the summer layoff.
The first half saw a few chances, with Sunset’s Lauren Scott with the first good scoring chance in the 25th but her shot went well high. A close range shot by Arie Smith for Scholars was off the mark just before the half.
Noticeably busy for Scholars was Brittany Bodden, who made a few impressive runs down the right wing, creating headaches for defenders.
The game entered the half scoreless. The deadlock was broken in the 64th minute when a penalty was awarded to Sunset FC. Elena Testori stepped to the spot and made good on the penalty kick. Kristina Seymour got a glove to the ball but could not prevent it from finding the back of the net. (see video below)
With Scholars pressing hard for an equalizer, they were cheered on lustily by their supporters, with the youngest of them joining in with chants of “Let’s go Scholars, lets go!” The ladies on the field pressed to give their fans what they were calling for but Sunset FC ensured they would work hard for any opportunity.
An attempt by Bodden late in the second went a little high as Sunset held on to win the shield.
The beneficiary of the Charity Shield was Meals on Wheels.
