Hew makes a splash in Florida

Cayman’s Lauren Hew made her presence felt making three finals with two podium finishes for Saint Andrews School at the 2016 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 1-A swimming championships earlier this month.
Hew helped the girls team to finish fifth overall on 11 November with her performances in the 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard freestyle relay.
Her first medal came in the relay, which she anchored during the preliminaries. In the final, she led the quartet on the first leg, setting her team up well for an eventual second place finish to earn a silver medal.

The Caymanian’s second medal came in the 100-yard backstroke, one of her stronger events. After swimming 55.31 seconds in the preliminary round, Hew touched the wall in 55.29 seconds in the final to win the bronze. Earlier this year, she won CARIFTA gold medals in the 100m and 200m backstroke swim for the 15-17 age division.
She also made the final for Saint Andrews in the 100-yard freestyle but had to settle for a sixth-place finish after swimming a time of 51.23 seconds. Her personal best in the event is 50.95 seconds.
Hew’s performances were strong enough in all three events to earn All-American status, per a report on the school’s website.
