The Cayman Islands qualified for World Cricket League Division 5 after a comfortable 67 run win over Argentina on Thursday, 23 February, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series in Buenos Aires.

For the second straight day, play was cut short due to overnight rain, which also delayed the start. Thursday’s game was shortened to 33 overs at Belgrano Athletic Club. Argentina won the toss and sent Cayman to bat.

Darren Cato top-scored with 33 runs, while Ryan Bovell made a quick-fire 30, as the visitors closed their innings on 173 runs. Esteban MacDermott was the pick of the Argentine bowlers, taking three wickets for 24 runs off his seven overs.

Cayman’s bowlers struck early, removing opener Matias Paterlini without score, and continued to keep the upper hand. Argentina were restricted to 106 runs with Alejandro Ferguson top-scoring with 28. Conroy Wright picked up four wickets for 33 runs. He also claimed four wickets in the opening match a day earlier.

On Wednesday, Cayman edged Argentina for a three-run win. Friday is a rest day before returning to the Hurlingham Club for a final match on Saturday.

The teams were playing in the ICC Americas World Cricket League Qualifiers. Cayman will now gain promotion from the Americas Division to World Cricket League Division 5. This is a life-line for Cayman Cricket after seeing its international standing slide in recent years.
