Walton advances; Murray, Wray eliminated

Cayman Islands national record holder Jamal Walton has advanced to the final of the boys U20 400m, while Shalysa Wray and Daujaughn Murray failed to make finals in the events they contested on the opening morning of the 2017 Flow CARIFTA Games on Saturday (15 April) in Curacao.
Walton finished second to Christopher Taylor of Jamaica in heat #1 with a time of 47.72 seconds, which was third fastest overall. The finals will be run Saturday evening around 6:45 p.m.
He is expected to be among the medals for the event, which he won silver in last year. He has been in fine form coming into the games, having equalled his national record of 45.99 in the event in March, while running for Miramar High School in Florida.
Meantime, Wray, who attends St Jago High School in Jamaica, failed to advance in the girls U20 400m. She was fourth in the first semi-final with a time of 57.30 seconds, which was not fast enough to advance to Saturday evening’s final. That was her only event, so her games are over.
Murray, competing at CARIFTA for the first time, was fourth in his heat of the boys U18 400m. The John Gray High School student crossed the line in 49.92 seconds, 13th fastest out of 27 runners. Only the top finisher from each of the four heats plus the next four fastest times qualified for the finals. His time was noticeably faster than the 51.49 seconds he ran to win the event at the Inter-Secondary Track and Field Championships last month but behind his personal best of 49.12. Murray’s games are not over. He still has the 200m and the 4x100m events.
Competing for the Cayman Islands on Saturday evening are: Walton in the U20 boys 400m final; Louis Gordon, Jevon Watler-Christian and Lamar Reid are both in the U18 boys long jump; Lacee Barnes is a medal favourite in the U20 girls discus throw; Dominic Dyer and William Edwards line up for the U20 boys 1,500m – Dyer won bronze in 2016.
