Aussie is new cricket technical director

Peter Anderson, a former coach of national programs in Afghanistan and Papua New Guinea, has taken over the reins as Cayman Cricket’s Technical Director.

Cayman Cricket President Abali Hoilett told CaymanSportsBuzz.com that the Australian was selected by an “independent committee from approximately 42 applicants after an extensive interview process”.

Anderson, 55, is a Level 3 High Performance Coach who was formerly coach of the Afghanistan National Academy and the director of the Afghanistan Youth Sports Nutrition and Health Education Program.

Before Afghanistan he was National Coach of Papua New Guinea, which he moved into ICC One Day International status and into receiving High Performance funding from the ICC. He also coached their national Women’s team to number one ranking in the ICC East Africa region.

The former Queensland wicketkeeper replaces Theo Cuffy, who left the position at the end of June after 20 years on the job. CaymanSportsBuzz.com understands Anderson started work in August.

Hoilett, earlier this year, noted among the concerns for the sport in the Cayman Islands was the recent disappointing international performances of the national senior men’s team. It’s expected reversing this trend will be at the core of Anderson’s focus in the months ahead.

The Cayman Islands men’s national team slumped to sixth place at the ICC World Cricket League Division 6 competition last year.
