Bruce Lee punching for KOs
- Updated: 25 August 2016
Welterweight boxer, Bruce Lee Coulson, leaves Thursday to fight in a boxing tournament in the United States.
Coulson, 32, is competing in the Sugar Bert Boxing Title Belt National Qualifiers in Columbus, Georgia from 26-28 August. He’ll be accompanied by coach/trainer Ryan Barrett.
Coulson’s last official ring appearance was 9 July during the Elite Marble and Granite Fight Night 2 versus Canadian Jayson Pierre. The Caymanian boxer won comfortably 90-81.
“Since the Canada event, he’s been in full training,” Barrett said. “Bruce is going to cause every 147-pound guy worldwide a lot of trouble, especially with that right hand.”
When CaymanSportsBuzz.com sat down with Coulson after a training session earlier in the week at the Dalmain Ebanks Boxing Gym, the fighter was clear in his mind about his mission. When asked if he agreed with Barrett’s plan to win the belt, Coulson simply replied: “Nothing else”.
He also made it clear, he does not plan to leave his fate in the hands of ringside judges.
“I’m trying to end it as fast as possible, so I’m mostly preparing my body for pure physical combat – full force,” Coulson said. “I’m not going to be trying to hesitate and do tactics around the guy or anything. We’re trying to end this thing quickly and try to move on to the next opponent and try to keep moving on.”
Donie Anglin, another coach who has been working with Coulson, believes the George Town fighter has what it takes to create a havoc when he steps into the ring at the Lumpkin Center on the Columbus State University campus.
“We have confidence in Bruce. [He] is tough-minded, tough bodied and everything. He’s not afraid of anything at all. So, for him to lose, I don’t know how the [opponent] is going to win,” Anglin said.
The tournament is sanctioned by the USA Boxing Association. The winners of each weight class division(s) that win a title belt will advance to the National Championship, 18-21 November in Kissimmee, Florida at The Park Inn Radisson Resort Disney World.
Blayze Wood was also scheduled to represent Cayman at the tournament but a decision was taken during training to keep the young fighter at home.
