CIFA looking at pre-season beach football tournament
- Updated: 25 August 2016
As beach football gains popularity in countries across the Americas, the Cayman Islands Football Association is hoping the trend will catch on here.
CIFA has announced that it is looking to start a women’s beach football competition in early September that will serve as a warm-up before the season starts in October.
“In the majority of Central American and Caribbean countries, beach soccer is becoming very popular and Cayman needs to quickly get involved and be ready for any upcoming tournament opportunities,” Martha Godet, the coordinator of CIFA’s women’s programme, told CaymanSportsBuzz.com.
In August, a select team representing the Cayman Islands played three exhibitions on the sand at Public Beach against a team from Ohio Wesleyan University. The teams had so much fun in the first two scheduled encounters that they readily agreed to play a third.
“It is great fitness preparation going into the regular season for 11-a-side football. It is a fun format and takes advantage of our naturally beautiful beach environment,” Ms Godet added, saying it is expected that the matches on Saturdays will create a fun, family-friendly environment.
She said participation is open to females 15 years of age and older who play in CIFA’s leagues. Clubs interested in being a part of the competition are asked to contact the CIFA Secretariat (secretariat@cifa.ky) or Ms Godet (mgodet63@gmail.com).
