CIOC looking to partner with Michael Johnson Performance
- Updated: 23 August 2016
The Cayman Islands Olympic Committee (CIOC) is looking to partner with Michael Johnson Performance (MJP), founded by four-time Olympic Champion and former holder of the world and Olympic records in the 200 and 400 metres.
Donald McLean, CIOC President and Jennifer Powell, Chef de Mission, met with Michael Johnson in Rio de Janeiro at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games to discuss the potential collaboration.
Still in its early days, the potetial partnership will identify the CIOC’s current athletic situation and advise on a talent identification programs, which will be closely linked to the schools and education.
MJP, headquartered in North Texas, provides in-season and off-season training programs, biochemical analysis, nutrition assessments, remote coaching, physical therapy and injury prevention programs for athletes to build the fundamentals for athletic progress, and maintain superior levels of athletic performance.
“We want to put together a strategic plan, with the goal of one day winning an Olympic medal,” says Donald McLean, CIOC President. “Medals are not the most important thing, but it is still nice to win one because we have a lot of talent in Cayman, so we would like to have a structure with sponsors, [Cayman Islands] Government and the Olympic Committee to put together a plan.”
Once funding through various sponsors is secured, the training programs will be designed specifically to CIOC athletes and will help individuals of every athletic ability achieve their goals and reach their full potential in their sport, creating future Olympians.
With a global presence in more than five countries, MJP serves athletes of all sports including young athletes, high performance and professional athletes, both in the United States and worldwide.
Equipped with the latest training technology and equipment, the Michael Johnson Performance facility has a 6,000-square-foot multi-purpose indoor turf; four-lane indoor track; 3D motion capture system with 20 HD motion capture cameras; a state-of-the-art weight room; outdoor swimming pool; physical therapy clinic, and much more.
