Ebanks advances in Barbados
- Updated: 7 December 2016
A showdown between Cayman’s Dariel Ebanks and Jamaica’s Ian Darby was promised on a boxing card in Kingston last month. Darby was a scratch for that event but the two met Tuesday, 6 December, at the Caribbean Development Boxing Tournament in Barbados.
This time, as he did with Alando Lewis – Darby’s replacement in November, the light heavyweight dominated the Jamaican, landing several impactful body shots along the way. Ebanks, as he is known to do, appeared composed as he did his work in the ring.
He has advanced to the next round of the tournament.
Also fighting on the opening session of the tournament at the Barbados Beach Club south of the capital, Bridgetown, was 17 year-old Alexander Smith.
Smith faced Christopher Moore of Guyana in a junior lightweight bout. After an even first round in which he started brightly, the young Caymanian appeared to lose confidence as the fight went on. His record dropped to zero wins and four losses in his career, which began in earnest earlier in 2016. He is a talented fighter, who has faced stiff opposition at the front end of his time in competitive boxing but continues to win the praise of national team coach, Ryan Barrett.
Cayman’s other fighter at the tournament, Hopkin Ebanks, faces Shemar Bertram of St Maarten in the middleweight division on Wednesday, 7 December.
CaymanSportsBuzz.com will have updates as the tournament progresses.
