Elite, Scholars advance to women’s final
- Updated: 14 May 2018
A stoppage time goal by captain Shanice Monteith on 12 May propelled Elite Sports Club to a win over Sunset FC and into the final of the 2018 CIFA Women’s President’s Cup, where a match-up with rivals Scholars International awaits.
Sunset took the lead after 23 minutes at Ed Bush Sports Complex courtesy a strike from Molly Kehoe. Elite pulled level 13 minutes later thanks to Tamoy Phillips. Kehoe added another shortly before the half-time whistle to give Sunset a 2-1 lead.
Sunset held on to the lead until the 77th minute when Ethana Villalobos scored for Elite. Then it was Monteith with the winner in the second minute of stoppage time to seal the come from behind 3-2 win for Elite.
Meantime, Scholars International didn’t need to kick a ball to secure their berth in the final. Injuries and unavailability of players resulted in George Town Sports Club being unable to field a team and forfeited their semi-final against the league champions.
It’s poised to be an entertaining showdown in the final. Scholars are looking for their second piece of silverware for the season and Elite will be eager to settle the score after losing their league crown to their West Bay rivals due to goal difference.
A date for the finals was not confirmed at the time of writing.
