Jonah Ebanks rises to the top as Footballer of the Week
- Updated: 30 November 2016
After a week of solid performances in the various football leagues being contested in the Cayman Islands, Jonah Ebanks of Academy Sports Club has been named the Cayman Sports Buzz Footballer of the Week presented by Futbolista World.
Ebanks played a starring role as Academy’s side in the Cayman Premier League won its third straight game and move to within a point of the top of the standings.
With the score level against Sunset FC on 27 November, the 20 year-old put his side ahead in the 49th minute – a lead they would not surrender. In the 87th minute, he added an insurance goal to stretch the lead to 3-1 with his league-leading sixth tally of the season.
Ebanks played well overall in Academy’s come from behind win. “Sunday’s game was really tough. Sunset came out hard. It took us a while to get into our game but in the end, we did what we had to do,” he said.
The forward/midfielder showed humility when we spoke to him about his goal-scoring prowess this season. “I think it’s really good and good for the team as well because I’m top scorer. I couldn’t score the goals without my teammates,” he said sharing the credit.
While the three points from the win was satisfying, there was a special moment for the Ebanks household when his younger brother, Trey assisted on his second goal.
“It was really good. I’m happy for him. It’s his first season coming in, so it’s really good to get an assist from my younger brother,” Ebanks said.
Ebanks was presented with a certificate, a Futbolista World sports shirt, and a gift certificate to be used toward new gear at Futbolista World. He has also been entered into a draw to win an additional prize from Futbolista World at the end of the season.
Each week, Cayman Sports Buzz will select a player for the Footballer of the Week honour based on their performance in any of the following leagues: Cayman Premier League, CIFA Women’s Premier League, CIFA First Division, CIFA youth leagues and the CUC Primary Football League/Girls Primary Football League.
At the end of the season, Cayman Sports Buzz will be presenting a more substantial award to the Footballer of the Year.
