Latinos, Sunset play to stalemate
- Updated: 17 October 2016
Freshly promoted Latinos FC and bottom of the table Sunset FC played to an entertaining stalemate at the Ed Bush Stadium on Sunday in the latest round of the Cayman Premier League season.
Both teams entered the game at Ed Bush Sports Complex in search of their first win of the young season but it was Latinos who signaled their intention from the opening whistle with a shot toward goal from the first possession. However, it was off the mark and caused Lee Parry no issues in the Sunset net.
A few moments later, Miguel Monteiro slid a shot across the face of the Latinos goal but nothing came of it.
Sunset got on the score sheet first when, in the 10th minute, Edward Crockett unleashed a corner kick that was headed home by Tom Chipchase. The technical staff must have been pleased with a play that looked like it was executed as drawn up on the practice field. That was Sunset’s first goal of the season after being shutout through the first two weeks by Academy SC and Roma United.
The lead didn’t last long. Three minutes later, Jarol Smith Rizo dribbled his way through the Sunset defense and curled a superb shot past a diving Lee Parry, who hardly stood a chance. That was Smith Rizo’s second goal of the season and second in as many weeks.
A golden opportunity to retake the lead presented itself to Sunset when the Latinos keeper went down after making an initial save, leaving the goal vacant but a Sunset shot hit the crossbar. The woodwork saw action on the other end as Smith Rizo hit the post late in the first half off a good strike of the ball.
The first 45 minutes ended with the score level. Smith Rizo, who was playing well, had a shot tipped over the bar by Parry to deny Latinos the edge early in the second half. Evans Chacon had a good chance to give Sunset the lead but drove his shot high and hard with little consequence to the keeper.
Both teams kept up the intensity throughout the game but will rue the missed chances as it ended 1-1.
Sunset FC picked up its first point of the season, while Latinos FC has a win, loss and draw through the first three weeks in the top flight since the 2008-09 season.
