Local boxers confirmed for Island Rumble
- Updated: 3 December 2016
The fight card, including four international amateur matchups featuring local fighters and a Caymanian in a professional exhibition, has been confirmed for the Island Rumble boxing event being hosted by boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao on 7 January, 2017.
Light heavyweight Dariel Ebanks, who is expected to compete at the Caribbean Amateur Boxing Championships in Barbados next week, is scheduled to meet Bahamian Israel Johnson at the event at now being held at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
Also on the card is female boxer Chambria Dalhouse. She will be featured in a featherweight fight against Kerron Thomas of Jamaica, who she defeated for her first international win in November. During the fight in Kingston, Dalhouse impressed as she put Thomas on the canvas multiple times en route to an entertaining victory.
Alexander Smith, a lightweight who will also represent Cayman at the Caribbean Amateur Boxing Championships, will meet a yet to be announced American fighter. Dan Hewitt-Dean will face Ricardo Beckford. They were originally to meet at the Fight Night in the City card in Kingston last month but the fight was postponed.
A pair of ‘white collar’ exhibition bouts have also been announced. Simon Hurry from Collas Grill will fight Lee Murray of Andro Group, while James Burch of Walkers will face Logan Chinoy of Cayman Fight Factory.
Undefeated middleweight star Luis Arias will step between the ropes for an exhibition against Caymanian professional Peter “Lightning” Lewison.
The Island Rumble, organised by CMG Events, promises to be a marquee event with several prominent boxing figures travelling to Grand Cayman.
Pacquiao, who regained the WBO welterweight title with a win over Jessie Vargas in early November, is expected to make a few other appearances while on island. The Filipino superstar will break ground a new boxing gym at the Haig Bodden Sports Complex in Bodden Town. He will also be visiting Health City Cayman Islands.
CaymanSportsBuzz.com will bring further details as they become available.
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story had a misleading cover picture and an error regarding Keron Thomas’ name.
