Martin scores in three straight for Harbour View FC U20s
- Updated: 13 April 2017
When Michael Martin left Cayman Brac to play football in Jamaica last year, he wanted to prove he belonged with the big boys. To say he’s fit in well at Harbour View FC could very well be an understatement. The teenager appears to be on a hot streak for the “Stars from the East”.
He’s scored for the club’s Under-20 side in three straight matches, and finds a spot coming off the bench for the senior men’s team in the Red Stripe Premier League.
Martin scored his first goal for the club on 28 March in an Under-20 league match against Rockfort FC as part of a 4-2 win. A week later, on 4 April, he did the same in a home game as part of a 4-0 win over New Kingston. Then on 11 April, he found the back again in a 2-0 triumph over Brown’s Town FC.
In a Red Stripe Premier League game on 13 April, Martin entered came on as a substitute in the 73rd minute and fired a 23-yard left footer that struck the upright – a few inches difference and that would have been his sensational first goal for the senior side. HVFC drew 1-1 with Jamalco, who were relegated from the Jamaican top flight.
He could get a chance for his first Premier League goal in the club’s final preliminary third round game this Sunday at home against 12th and last placed team Marverley Hughenden FC, who must win to give themselves any chance of avoiding relegation.
Harbour View FC Premier League and Under 20 Head Coach, Ludlow Bernard, has been impressed with Martin’s play.
“Michael has grown over the time that he has been here,” Bernard told CaymanSportsBuzz.com. “He realises that he has to do more as the competition is a lot greater. He possesses the qualities to be an impact player as he has a never say die attitude when playing. Very competitive, aggressive and a desire to be persistent are some of the qualities of the ‘little man’,” he added.
