President’s Cup quarterfinals this weekend
- Updated: 7 December 2016
A full slate of matches featuring the eight Cayman Premier League teams kicks off the CIFA President’s Cup this Sunday, 11 December, 2016.
Roma United begins the defence of the trophy it won last March with a match-up against Cayman Athletic SC. Roma, which beat Bodden Town FC 2-1 to win the cup on Ash Wednesday, will be looking to put its recent league form behind it. The club is languishing at the bottom of the table, having only picked up one point since winning its first two fixtures of the 2016-17 campaign. Kick-off against Cayman Athletic is 4:45 p.m. at the Ed Bush Sports Complex.
The top flight’s two West Bay-based clubs Scholars International and Elite Sports Club meet in a 7:00 p.m. kick-off at the same venue. Both teams sit in the top half of the table. Elite is in second, two points adrift of Bodden Town. Scholars are fourth with four wins in their nine matches so far this season.
At the Annex in George Town, league leaders and President’s Cup runner-up Bodden Town FC takes on a resurgent Sunset FC, which has won three of its last five games after a slow start to the season. Sunset is sixth in the Cayman Premier League standings. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:45 p.m.
The late match at the Annex features Latinos FC and Academy SC. Academy is unbeaten in its last four outings – the longest active streak in the Cayman Premier League, and has won five of its nine games this season. Latinos enters the Christmas break in sixth position, picking up points in three of its last five games.
The winners will advance to the semi-finals of the tournament, which will feature two legs on 5 and 19 February, 2017. The finals are scheduled for Ash Wednesday (1 March, 2017) at the Annex.
