Ruggers 7th and 8th at Americas North tournament
- Updated: 16 November 2016
The Cayman Islands women’s and men’s rugby sevens teams finished 7th and 8th respectively at the 2016 Rugby Americas North tournament in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad over the weekend.
After being blanked in their first two games against Jamaica (19-0) and Canada (52-0) on Saturday, 12 November, Cayman’s women rebounded with a convincing 22-0 drubbing of Bermuda and a 14-5 win over Turks and Caicos Islands to close out group play.
A rematch with Bermuda beckoned in the playoff for 7th and 8th place in the Women’s Shield. It was another shutout win for Team Cayman with a 19-0 final score.
While the women opened with the tough taste of defeat, Cayman’s men were savouring the taste of victory through their first three group games. First up was a 38-0 win against Curacao, followed by a 33-7 triumph over Dominican Republic, before thrashing British Virgin Islands 59-0.
That’s where the winning ended. Barbados got the better of Cayman in the final group game, winning 17-10.
After placing second in the group, Cayman advanced to the quarterfinals but lost to Jamaica 26-7. Mexico, which lost to Canada in the quarterfinals, was next up in the Plate semi-finals. Mexico won 12-0 to advance.
A rematch with Barbados awaited in the playoff for 7th and 8th positions. Cayman would not avenge their earlier loss, falling to the Bajans for a second time (26-5).
Canada won both the men’s and women’s Cup Finals.
