Scholars beat Sunset in women’s league
- Updated: 28 November 2018
Scholars International defeated a shorthanded Sunset Football Club 2-0 in the 2018/19 Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) Women’s League on 24 November to edge their way to the top of the table in the early going of the season.
Sunset started the game with eight players on the field. Kessie Gonzales put Scholars ahead in the 30th minute in the game played at Ed Bush Sports Complex. Sabrina Suberan added an insurance goal in the 67th minute that would see Scholars pick up their first win in two outings after a scoreless draw against Elite Sports Club on 18 November.
It was a reversal of fortunes after Sunset FC defeated Scholars International 7-3 in the Charity Shield on 28 October.
Elite are also on four points in the table after opening the regular season with a 1-0 win over Sunset FC on 4 November.
The Women’s League opened with only three clubs, after George Town Sports Club, which fielded a team last season, was unable to do so again. Other clubs reportedly tried to put together teams but failed to do so.
However, CIFA General Secretary Marcos Tinoco confirmed Wednesday night (27 November) that another team had been added. The team will play under the banner of Roma United.
The new side makes their debut against Scholars on 2 December against Scholars International starting at 6:00pm at Ed Bush Sports Complex. In the other game of the weekend, Elite Sports Club and Sunset Football Club meet a day earlier at the same venue for a 5:00pm kick-off.
