Scott hat-trick leads U20s past Brac FC

CI National U20 Men – 4, Cayman Brac FC – 2

A hat-trick from Zachary Scott propelled the Cayman Islands National U20 Men’s Team past Cayman Brac FC in the Brac Cup International 2016 on Saturday, 27 August.

The first good scoring opportunity of the night came in the 13th minute but CI U20’s Joshua McKenzie hit his shot into the side of the net. Cayman Brac FC was gifted an opportunity in the 25th minute when a defender failed to clear the ball cleanly from the danger area but Denrick Gayle’s shot hit the crossbar. Gayle would be denied on the next possession when Albertini Holness pounced from the goal to block his shot.

After even possession by both teams throughout the first half, Ian Kirkwood put Cayman Brac FC ahead 1-0 moments before the break.

Scott had a few chances early in the second half but did not capitalise. The U20 side equalised in the 67th minute thanks to a Casey McLaughlin free kick that beat Jose Gomez-Alcantara. It would take only four minutes for the U20s to take the lead, compliments Scott’s first goal when he rocketed a right-footed strike into the back of the net. He scored his second goal within two minutes in the 73rd to give his team a 3-1 advantage.

Scott completed his hat-trick in the 82nd minute after Christopher Reeves was tackled in the box and a penalty was awarded. Scott calmly put the ball past the keeper to widen the margin.

Playing with a sense of urgency as time ticked toward the final whistle and urged on by a vocal home crowd, Cayman Brac FC was rewarded when Brian Martin scored in added time to cut the lead to two goals but there would be no more scoring in the exciting affair.

The win for the Cayman Islands National U20 Men’s Team came 24 hours after they lost their opener to Johnson & Wales University 5-2. This wraps up their participation in Brac Cup International 2016.

“Tonight was much better than last night’s performance,” Head Coach Dion Brandon told CaymanSportsBuzz.com after the match.

Brandon said overall he was happy with the team’s performance given the two-week window the squad was given to prepare for the showcase. With some of the regular faces in the U20 squad having to head off to school overseas, several players who recently played in the CFU U17 World Cup qualifiers were drafted in.

“I’m very impressed [with them]. D’Andre Rowe and Rohelio Wright play at a tremendous level for their age. They fit right into the team perfectly. You can look forward to seeing great things from them in the future,” the coach added.

The Brac Cup International 2016 concluded on Sunday, 28 August when Cayman Brac FC faces Johnson & Wales University at 8:00 p.m. at the playing field on the Bluff.
