13 teams, comprising of a total of 48 players, participated in the 4th Annual Shooting Stars 3-on-3 basketball tournament organised by local media company Star 92.7FM and in support of the National Council of Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) this past Saturday, 28 July, at the Camana Bay Arts and Recreation Centre.
Teams competed in three age divisions: 7-9, 10-12, and 13-15.
The Cayman Raptors made up of team members Mason Miller, Kai Powell, Daniel Joven and Nathan Myles won the 7-9 group, defeating The Blue Iguanas 3-0 in the series.
In the 10-12 division, Hoopsters defeated The Bucket Boys in a close 4-3 showdown. The champions of Hoopsters were Arion Wright, Daric Ebanks, Aamair Latham and Jahron Barnes.
Wakanda defeated Trilogy 14-7 in the championship game of the 13-15 age group. Alwin Buttram, Joanki Montero, Jabari Walrond and Micah O’Garro took home the winning trophies.
“Basketball is not a just a sport in the Cayman Islands, it’s a lifestyle,” said Star 92.7FM Program Director John Watler. “While basketball talent will surely rise, Star 92.7FM provides the only 3-on-3 tournament platform on island for these youngsters to learn the rules and particular style of play for this recently recognised Olympic sport set to debut in Tokyo in 2020.”
NCVO Coordinator Mona Meade added: “This tournament is so much fun. It’s fast paced, and the kids really seem to enjoy showing off their talents. It’s always exciting for us to be a part of events with a focus on guiding and supporting the youth because it aligns nicely with what we do.”
She said money brought in from the event will go towards the NCVO’s Caring Cousins Lunch Support Programme which supplies hot meals to children at public schools.
“These children often come from families who cannot afford to provide lunch for them every day. We are so thankful to Star 92.7FM for allowing us to come out and raise these much-needed funds.”
Star 92.7FM thanked the NCVO, Camana Bay, Watler & Hislop Services Limited, Rubis Cayman Islands Limited, Winners Circle, Cox Lumber and Sports Director Mr. Collin Anglin for their dedication to the care, education and well–being of children and families in need of support in the Cayman Islands by staging the highly anticipated tournament.
