Softballers off to Nicaraguan tournament
- Updated: 2 September 2016
The Cayman Islands is competing in the Nicaraguan International Softball Tournament in Miami this weekend, with the goal of returning home with championship trophies.
“No disrespect to any of the other teams but that is our goal,” said Marlon Thomas, the head coach, who has been working with the national women’s team ahead of the tournament.
Confidence has been high heading into the competition, as teams have been training regularly throughout August. Cayman’s women have perennially been among the best at the tournament, winning it two years ago, while the men are searching for their first title.
“This year, we really do have a good women’s team and also, the men are very strong this year. Hopefully they will come through for us as well. The women definitely will come through with the championship this year,” said Cayman Islands Softball Association President, Molly-Ann Moore.
Thomas said a big part of training was boosting physical fitness to cope with playing as many as three games per day.
The 2-5 September tournament is being played at Tropical Park, 7900 SW 40 Street, Miami. As a result of the national teams participating, there will be no play this weekend in the local men’s league. The women’s domestic league wrapped up a few weeks back.
