Sol Blazers win back-to-back titles
- Updated: 12 June 2017
Sol Blazers celebrated defeated Peachwave (Silver Bullets) 87-77 in a deciding third game of the Men’s Division 1 finals to be crowned 2017 Cayman Islands Basketball Association champions Sunday night (11 June).
After a pair of games decided by three points each, the rubber match was bound to be a high-intensity affair and the players on both teams brought it.
Blazers opened with purpose with Adam Milburn (13 points) finding range early. The defending champs held a five-point edge with the score 25-20 at the end of the first quarter. Blazers stretched the advantage to double digits with 8:30 left in the first half and led 55-43 after two quarters.
Peachwave hung around with Jake Whittaker (16 points) coming up with some big buckets down the stretch. Davion Cotterell (11 points), although he did not have the offensive firepower like he did earlier in the series, was also big on both ends of the floor to keep his team in the game.
Blazers though were superior on the day and held of the challenge. Nikolai Marquis and Milburn iced the game at the stripe when Peachwave fouled intentionally within the final minute.
Strong defensive hustle saw anaemic scoring in the fourth with both teams combining for 22 points in the final frame.
The O’Garro brothers, Shaad and Samuel, despite the tough defence, were able to fill the box score. Samuel had a game-high 29 points along with 12 rebounds and four assists.
“It was tough. Davion Cotterell played a hell of a game and Jake [Whittaker] gave them some buckets. It was tough defending but we got through it,” said Shaad O’Garro, who was named the finals MVP. He finished with 22 points, 15 rebounds, six blocks and four assists in the final game. His finals averages were: 23 ppg, 16.3 rpg, 7 apg, 4.3 bpg.
After going down 1-0 in the series Shaad O’Garro said they used their experience to pull through and repeat as champions. “It’s a great feeling. Not many people get to do that, so I appreciate it,” he told CaymanSportsBuzz.com.
Though the brothers put up big number throughout the series, the MVP said the credit goes to the entire team. “People think that the bench guys are just guys to sub in and give energy all the time but they play a big role because without them, there wouldn’t be a team. They play a big role in all of this,” he said.
