Tight finish in second Fidelity race
- Updated: 19 September 2016
It was a close race to the finish line among the top two runners during the second race of the Fidelity Fun Run 2-Mile series on Saturday, 17 September.
Will Edwards and Jason Saunders matched each other stride for stride for the majority of the race but Edwards pulled away as he neared the end on Denham Thompson Way. Edwards improved his time from the previous week by more than a minute, while Saunders shaved about a second from his performance during the first race when he also placed second.
Edwards, who runs for the newly-formed 345 Athletics Club, finished in 10 minutes 31.7 seconds. Saunders crossed the line in 10:39.3. Victor Magalhaes (11:14.6), also of 345 AC, improved his week one performance by a spot to finish third. Dominic Dyer, who dominated the field to win the opening race, was absent.
After finishing fifth a week earlier when his legs were recovering from training, Edwards said he used the time to recover. That seemed to pay off on race day, along with a change in strategy.
“I raced the race a completely different way this time. Instead of just going out on my full pace and trying to hold it, I sat back with Jason and then with about 800 metres left to go, I made a push then another push,” he told CaymanSportsBuzz.com afterward.
Tiffany Cole continued to lead the women’s field, winning for the second straight race in 12 minutes 37 seconds. Molly Kehoe (12:49.4) was second and Kiara McLaughlin (13:39.9) third, to ensure a sweep for 345 AC.

The series wraps up on Saturday, 24 September, when all remains at stake. On the ladies’ side, Cole should be in a position to claim the with another strong performance, while on the men’s side, it remains wide open with two different winners so far and Saunders consistent in second lurking for the title.
The final race begins at 7:30 a.m. on Walkers Road near the Cayman Islands Further Education Centre, continuing to South Church Street and back onto Denham Thompson Way.
