Tight race in corporate football
- Updated: 14 July 2017
After five weeks of play, the latest results in the Cayman Islands Corporate Football League at Camana Bay showed that the Cup and Plate competitions will be anyone’s to take.
On the Cup side, Walkers showed their superiority in beating the Dart team 2-1. Goal scorers for Walkers were the talented Karl Solomon who finished a neat build-up play in the 21st minute and Ricoh Brown who curled in a strike from 25 yards out after rounding a defender in the 50th minute.
Dart pulled a goal back in the dying stages of the game when Benjamin Cupid turned a cross into his own net. The final score line was deceiving because Walkers dominated the game from start to finish. So confident were they that the coaching staff decided to give Solomon and Brown the final 15 minutes of the game off as they played some of their second-string players.
When asked for comment the 2016 league MVP Ricoh Brown said, “we made that look harder than it actually was, we should have won 4-0 at least”.
In Wednesday’s game, a strong Fidelity team was able to take care of business against MUFG. Goal scorers in that game were Jonah Ebanks, who took his season tally to five; Dwayne Wright, who is also on five goals for the season; and Roderick Pearson. Final score: Fidelity 3 – MUFG 0, as Fidelity remains undefeated atop the table. (See standings below)
In Thursday’s action, a determined PWC team was able to hold Britcay to a 0-0 tie. Despite the score line there were numerous chances for both teams but in the end neither was able to get the ball in the back of the net.
The featured game of the round between Maples and Butterfield did not disappoint. Butterfield began the stronger of the teams and took the lead in the 18thminute through Miguel Simms, his third of the season. This seemed to create some urgency in the Maples team and they were able to even the score through a well taken Theron Wood strike in the 29th minute.
However, the Maples celebration was short-lived, as Butterfield punched in a second goal one minute later through the crafty Forde Pearson. The halftime score was 2-1. A very competitive second half saw both teams create numerous chances, however, in the 61st minute Maples were able to equalise through their talisman Stephen Tatum. In the end, there wasn’t enough to separate the teams and the game ended 2-2.
The featured game of round six will be the Fidelity vs Maples game on Thursday, 20 July, at 7:00 p.m.
There are eight teams competing in the league this year: Dart Enterprises, Butterfield Bank, Walkers, BritCay, MUFG, PwC, Maples and Fidelity.
