2019 sailing underway with Commodores Cup
- Updated: 2 February 2019
The first J22 racing event of 2019 took place at the Cayman Islands Sailing Club over the weekend of 12-13 January with The Commodores Cup.
The competition consisted of a double point scoring long distance race starting off the Sailing Club, up and around Booby Cay, back to a turning mark by the Holiday Inn, finishing in Red Bay by the Cayman Islands Sailing on Saturday, followed by four shorter races on Sunday.
Yahoo skippered by Bruce Johnson, with crew Peter Bridge and Mark Edmunds, led the fleet through Booby Cay and never looked back, leading all the way to the finish, followed by Mayhem with Jo Richards, David Luu and Karl Mullee in second.
The second day saw shifty conditions with rain squalls. Moonstruck with Judy Bullmore, Mark Macfee and Lindsey Macfee after a long hiatus of 22 sailing led the first race, but could not hold on to lead at the finish. Peter Cunningham in Sunshine showed his ability to adapt from racing 70 foot catamarans across the Atlantic to smaller and slower J22’s in North Sound, with crew Paul Johnstone and Kelly Hill.
However it was the team of Just Leaving with Tomeaka McTaggart, Matt Diaz and Mikael Seffer, his first time in a J22, which won the day with four first places and the Commodores Cup.
