August restart for domestic CIFA competitions
- Updated: 8 July 2020
Senior men’s and women’s football competitions will resume in August, the Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) has announced, with the final round of league games and the President’s Cup finals.
Both the CIFA Premier League and the Women’s League have one round of games remaining, with Bodden Town FC and Scholars International the only clubs with a shot at the men’s title, with Elite SC already sealing the women’s crown.
Bodden Town sits atop the standings with 27 points (9 wins, 0 draws, 1 loss) and defending champions Scholars three points back (8-0-2). However, Bodden Town should be a lock to regain the title, as they have 10th place East End United as their final opponent on Sunday 16 August, while Scholars appear to have a tougher test against 6th placed Sunset FC. (see schedule below for venue and time)
With the league returning to a split format next season, Alliance FC and North Side SC have both been relegated to the First Division, where they will be joined by Cayman Athletic and Cayman Brac FC. Other clubs with sufficient players on their roster have been afforded the opportunity to enter a second side in the First Division in addition to their Premier League side.
On the women’s side, Elite SC, which has already clinched the title in the three-team competition, will face rivals Scholars International in the final league game at Ed Bush Sports Complex on Saturday 8 August at 8:00pm. This will serve as a dressed rehearsal for the President’s Cup final the following weekend, when the teams meet again with more on the line.
“I’m very excited to have football back in Cayman and to have the players back on the field,” CIFA President Alfredo Whittaker told Cayman Sports Buzz.
He said the necessary protocols will be in place as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic, indicating that strict sanitising measures are being implemented, adding “we will have spectators in the stadiums respecting social distancing”.
An earlier decision was made to cancel the 2019/2020 CIFA Youth Leagues but Whittaker said plans will be announced soon regarding the upcoming season.
