The number 10 jersey is usually reserved for players whose performances give you something to remember. If you’ve seen the Scholars International women’s side play, you’d know that there is something special about the way Susani Lucas plays.
While the team has had its struggles this season, there is new-found life ahead of the FA Cup semifinals. Among the bright spots is the 18-year-old with number 10 on her back.
In the final league game against Alliance FC on 18 March, Scholars had something to prove after losing their prior encounter 1-0 two months earlier. “We just wanted to have a comeback because we knew that we made a mistake the first game that we played against them and we paid for it,” Lucas said.
This time around, the costly mistakes would not undo Scholars’ efforts, as they dominated for the 4-0 win. As for Lucas, she lit up the scoresheet – she scored all the goals; two on either side of the interval.
She opened her account in the 29th minute before doubling her tally two minutes before the half. Her hat-trick came three minutes after play resumed and she capped it off with another in the 74th. “The best one was the hat-trick because it meant so much to me,” Lucas said of the finishes.
“It very good and something I’ve never experienced. It was awesome,” she said. Now, for her efforts, she’s been named the Cayman Sports Buzz Footballer of the Week presented by Futbolista World.
Up next is a semi-final tie with Sunset FC in the FA Cup on 25 March at Ed Bush Sports Complex. “We are definitely having the mindset of going to score some goals and advance to the finals but we know it won’t be easy,” Lucas said.
At a brief ceremony on 23 March, Lucas was presented with a certificate, a Futbolista World sports shirt, and a gift certificate to be used toward new gear at Futbolista World. She was also entered into a draw to win an additional prize from Futbolista World at the end of the season.
Each week, Cayman Sports Buzz will select a player for the Footballer of the Week honour based on their performance in any of the following leagues: Cayman Premier League, CIFA Women’s Premier League, CIFA First Division, CIFA youth leagues and the CUC Primary Football League/Girls Primary Football League.
At the end of the season, Cayman Sports Buzz will be presenting a more substantial award to the Footballer of the Year.
