Athletes get set for 2017 Duathlon

Runners get off the mark of the 2016 race.

More than a hundred athletes are expected to line up for the 2017 McGrath Tonner Duathlon on Sunday 4 June.

The race consists of three legs: a two-mile run, followed by a 12-mile bike ride, then another two-mile run. Athletes can take part as an individual, or as part of a two-person or three-person team. The duathlon begins at 7:00 a.m. from the Cayman Islands Yacht Club.

Nadine Gray was the female solo winner in 2016.

The duathlon has proved popular among triathletes in training, and novices wishing to test their skills.

“If you are thinking of competing in your first triathlon, this event is a great place to start. We encourage athletes of all levels to get involved,” said Cayman Islands Triathlon Association president Trevor Murphy.

Entry fees are $30 per person for an individual entry, $50 for a two-person team or $60 for a three-person team. Participants must be members of the Cayman Islands Triathlon Association. Membership costs $15 annually and is available at registration. Commemorative T-shirts and goody bags are available for the first 100 people who register, so sign-up here.

Organisers stress there will be no in person registration on race day. Check in will open at 6:00 a.m. on race day, with the race starting at 7:00 a.m. sharp.

Stuart Bray was the male solo winner in 2016.

Ben Tonner, QC said: “We are excited to support the Duathlon this year. This is a fun event but also an important event for promoting sports in the Cayman Islands.”

McGrath Tonner, Health City Cayman Islands, Butterfield Bank, Aguru Marketing, X107 and Universal Fitness are proud sponsors of this year’s Cayman Islands Duathlon.
