Bray wins New Day 5K
- Updated: 18 January 2017
Stuart Bray easily won he FN Sports New Day 5K on Saturday, 14 January, ahead of more than 50 other runners, who competed along a breezy SafeHaven course.
Bray finished in 18 minutes, 37.55 seconds, more than a minute and a half before a tight race for second place. Tobias Muchene held off Derek Larner for the second spot. Muchene finished in 20 minutes, 18.11 seconds, while Larner crossed the line in 20 minutes, 21.18 seconds.
“It was extremely windy. So, I just focused on using the wind on the way out, try and run as fast as possible and just hang on on the way back because it was very windy on the way back,” said Bray, who is preparing for the Generali Mercuryman Triathlon on Sunday, 22 January.
Sandra Mersinger was the first female finisher in 25 minutes, 50.91 seconds. Angela Czarnocki was next in 26 minutes, 9.22 seconds. In third place among the females was Blaire Lindsay Cook in 27 minutes, 8.16 seconds.
In addition to the competition of the event, part of the draw to the New Day 5K was that participants were encouraged to dress up as their favourite characters.
“It was a beautiful turnout. Everyone had a great time,” said FN Sports founder, Kendall ‘Flash’ Ebanks. “I really enjoyed seeing everyone running in their character costumes. We had some amazing costumes this morning.”
A big hit of the morning was Michelle Lamont running inside an inflatable T-Rex costume. The gusty conditions made it more challenging for her but she finished with a smile on her face.
Also donning costumes were Alyssa Dodson and her eight year-old son, Luke. Alyssa was dressed as Princess Leia, while Luke interesting was dressed as Darth Vader.
“It’s not often that you get a chance to dress up as your favourite character and get out here and run and have a great time in whatever suit you want to wear,” Ebanks said as the runners crossed the finish line.
The next FN Sports event is the Capt. Marvin’s Memorial Splash & Dash on 12 March.
