Canada beats Cayman by 8 wickets
- Updated: 23 August 2019
Canada beat the Cayman Islands for the second straight time, as they cruised to an eight-wicket victory at the ICC T20 Americas Finals in Bermuda on Thursday, 22 August 2019.
Canada captain Navneet Dhaliwal won the toss and sent the Cayman Islands to bat. Cayman’s batsmen never settled well with only Greg Strydom (23), Chad Hauptfleisch (16) and Troy Taylor (11 not out) made it to double digits, as a slow-scoring innings ended on 91 for seven off 20 overs.
Saad Bin Zafar was the bane of the Cayman’s batsmen on the day, taking three wickets for only eight runs off his four overs.
Cayman’s defence of their total started on a positive note when skipper Alessandro Morris bowled Rizwan Cheema off the fifth ball of the innings without a run on the board. Then Kervin Ebanks got RA Thomas caught behind by Hauptfleish in the next over. At that stage, two wickets were down without any runs to Canada’s name.
Dhaliwal and NR Kumar came together and romped home, with the skipper coring 53 off 34 balls and Kumar adding 37, as Canada won in the 13th over with 95 for two.
The win sees Canada securing a spot for the Global qualifiers later this year. The top two teams in the four-team tournament (Bermuda and USA the other two teams) make it to the next round. Meantime, this was the fourth loss in as many games for the Cayman Islands, who are having a rough week in Bermuda.
