Cayman men ready to defend Island Games hoops gold
- Updated: 30 June 2019
After winning their first ever gold medal in Gotland two years ago, the Cayman Islands men’s basketball team heads to the XVIII NatWest International Island Games with a bullseye on their back.
Adding to the intrigue is that their only loss in 2017 came in the preliminary round to this year’s host, Gibraltar, a defeat that they avenged in a hotly contested gold medal game.
Coaches Ed Pellot-Rosa and Duran Whittaker have been readying the squad for the 6-12 July 2019 Games.
Cayman Sports Buzz dropped in on a recent training session to see what the atmosphere was like in the camp and spoke with captain Samuel O’Garro and two teenaged rookies: Kai Robinson and Joshua O’Garro.
The full team is Samuel O’Garro (captain) NiiAkwei General (vice-captain), Davion Cotterell, Juawon Ebanks, Tikko Moore, Joshua O’Garro, Shaad O’Garro, Kai Robinson, Deandre Simpson, Arin Taylor, Phillip Webb, Jake Whittaker.
The Cayman Islands are grouped with Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, and Aland for the preliminary round robin phase. They open against Isle of Wight on 7 July.
