Cayman to host Coventry University football team
- Updated: 18 May 2017
A team of footballers from Coventry University will play a series of friendly matches against local teams during a two-week visit to the Cayman Islands.
The trip is being arranged by Jack Brazil, a former Coventry player, who moved here last year to be a youth development coach at Excel Sports Management and also volunteers as coach of the Academy Sports Club side that plays in the Cayman Premier League.
Brazil told CaymanSportsBuzz.com this follows a similar exercise in the Turks and Caicos Islands two years ago, although he noted not as much focus will be on player development training this time, as the level of football in Cayman is higher.
“The real aim of this trip is to provide some coaching expertise. Seven of the 14 players that are coming are actually qualified coaches, six of which are doing sports related courses,” he said.
Brazil pointed out that those players are studying disciplines including physiotherapy, sports science, sports management and sports marketing.
“So, they can provide good knowledge both in coaching aspects and in terms of kids who are thinking of going off to college and university, they can also discuss with them future career prospects and what the university football scene looks like because it’s a lot different to the American system that is more well-known here,” he said.
Brazil also said that another aim is getting local teams to get an opportunity to play against a different style of play.
While here, the players will also be engaging in community work. They have also been gathering football supplies to be donated to youth teams here.
