Caymanian footballer inks pro deal in Wales

Former Cayman Islands U20 footballer Anton Nelson has signed a professional contract with a premier league club in Wales.

Nelson inked the one-year deal with Llanelli Town AFC after they were promoted to the JD Welsh Premier League and made his debut during cup game on 28 August.

The 21-year-old, who plays predominantly on the right wing, said he was excited to join the club as it makes a bid to remain in the top division in Wales.

“It’s a great feeling,” the 21-year-old told CaymanSportsBuzz.com. “I’m just a firm believer in progression. As cliché as it sounds, I really believe it’s just the beginning.”

He was offered the contract after a tryout earlier in the year. “Last season, I was playing in the UK and my agent let me know that there was a possibility of coming over to the Welsh Premier League and those are the sorts of things that if there’s an opportunity, you have to take it,” he said.

“Fortunately for me, I played in an initial game and scored and had two assists. Then we played Swansea City – a mixture of the first team and Under-23 players – and it was after that that the manager let me know that I’d be getting offered a one-year contract with the club,” the former Cayman Prep and High School student said.

His goals for the season are to help the Reds stay in the Premier League, while being an integral part of the offense. “My personal goals for this season are to try and get into double digits when it comes to goals and assists in all competitions however that adds up.

Anton is the son of lawyers Roger and Wilma Nelson.
