Double-brace seals award for Studenhofft
- Updated: 11 January 2017
“Listen to your mother.” That’s something most of us have heard repeatedly, particularly during our youth. 14-year-old Gunnar Studenhofft did just that, as he followed his mother’s advice when he laced up his boots on Saturday, 7 January.
“My mom always tells me every game to try and score three goals and keep that process going and that will motivate you to do better in the game,” the young footballer said.
As he suited up for Cayman Athletic Sports Club in the CIFA Boys’ Under-15 League, Gunnar heeded his mother’s words, scoring not three but four goals to lead his side to a 7-3 victory over Academy Sports Club. That performance was so outstanding that it secured him the nod of being named the Cayman Sports Buzz Footballer of the Week presented by Futbolista World.
While his name is credited to the strikes in the 14th, 24th, 56th and 76th minutes, Gunnar knows he could not have scored without the support of his team, and he readily shared the spotlight.
“We played well as a team. Academy put up a good fight but we had the strength to beat them and thanks to the team, I got the goals,” he said.
The Grace Christian Academy student recently returned from a one-week training stint with the Manchester City academy due to his strong play in last year’s Cayman Airways Invitational Under-15 Youth Cup. He said he put that training into the game, which helped with the results on the pitch.
“It helped me to be think more and play off the ball quicker,” he said before quickly adding that while he’s happy with his game, he still has work to do. “I always think I can improve and play better every day.”
Gunnar was presented with a certificate, a Futbolista World sports shirt, and a gift certificate to be used toward new gear at Futbolista World. He has also been entered into a draw to win an additional prize from Futbolista World at the end of the season.
Each week, Cayman Sports Buzz will select a player for the Footballer of the Week honour based on their performance in any of the following leagues: Cayman Premier League, CIFA Women’s Premier League, CIFA First Division, CIFA youth leagues and the CUC Primary Football League/Girls Primary Football League.
At the end of the season, Cayman Sports Buzz will be presenting a more substantial award to the Footballer of the Year.
