Father-son duo to represent Cayman
- Updated: 3 January 2017
The Cayman Islands will be represented at a prestigious international golf event this month by the father and son pairing of Michael and Payten Wight.
The Wights will compete in the Latin America Amateur Championship (LAAC) to be played 12-17 January at the Club de Golf de Panama, Panama City. The tournament will feature many amateur golfers, some ranked in the top 100 in the world.
This father and son team represented Cayman at the first ever LAAC in Argentina and Michael also played in 2016’s event in the Dominican Republic.
This event was founded three years ago, by the Masters Tournament, The R&A and the United States Golf Association.
Its purpose is to help grow the game of golf South and Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean. The winner of the LAAC gets a spot to play in the 2017 Masters Tournament at Augusta.
In addition to this tournament, both Wights have represented the Cayman Islands at other international events including the Caribbean Amateur Championships, Island Games and the 2016 World Amateur Team Championships in Mexico.
