High school athletes blaze the track
- Updated: 23 March 2017
John Gray High School athletes ran away with the 2017 Inter-Secondary Championships with dominant performances last week.
JGHS won the boys and girls categories, to easily top the overall points table. Second was Clifton Hunter High School, with the Brac’s Layman E. Scott High School third. The Cayman Islands Further Education Centre (CIFEC) was fourth, followed by Cayman Prep – the highest finisher among the private schools.
Despite the dominance of JGHS, several stellar performances were put in on the final day by student athletes of various schools across the Cayman Islands. Some of the highlights:
CIFEC’s Rasheem Brown appears to be rounding out into good form ahead of the CARIFTA Games in April. The 16-year-old was in a class of his own in the open boys 110m hurdles, winning in a time of 14.00 seconds, 5.83 seconds ahead of his nearest competition. He also pulled away from the pack to win his age group’s 100m sprint in 10.92 seconds, the only runner to break the 11-second mark. JGHS’s Najae Gordon was also impressive, as he won the boys 14-15 100m in 11.10 seconds.
Another CARIFTA medal hopeful, Aijah Lewis leapt her way to gold in the long jump. The Dual Enrollement student set a mark of 5.24 metres, the furthest among 16-17 girls.
Cayman Prep’s Molly Kehoe, after winning the 3,000m on day one, returned with an impressive run of 5:20.14 to cross the line well ahead of her competition in the girls 12-13 1,500m. Her school mate, Dominic Dyer, looked ready to defend his CARIFTA medals with a solid performance in the 3,000m as well.
Micheal Smikle of JGHS had the crowd going as he dominated the boys 14-15 1,500m with a solid run of 4:29.37. Another crowd-pleasing performance for JGHS as the competition drew to a close was Daujaughn Murray, who won the boys 14-15 400m in 51.49 seconds, more than a second ahead of his nearest rival.
