National team tunes up with Invitational 7s win
- Updated: 13 August 2018
The Borelli Walsh Cayman Select rugby sevens side tuned up for upcoming overseas challenges by winning the 2018 Cayman Invitational Sevens on 11 August, capping a day of action with a win over Jamaica’s Mona Titans in the final.
After not conceding a score against them in three preliminary matches at Cayman Islands Rugby Club in South Sound, the national side was heavily expected to ease to the title, especially having earlier downed Mona Titans 31-0. However, the final of the one-day tournament was more competitive, ending 14-10.
“I think we made it a lot harder than we needed to make it,” said captain Robbie Cribb. “Jamaica, they’re a physical team, we didn’t expect anything less from them. A couple things didn’t go our way, a couple of things went their way. It’s what you expect in a final – a hard-fought game. I’m glad we came away with the win.”
The win comes as the side prepares for the Rugby Town Sevens tournament in Colorado, which attracts top players from around the world.
“Getting a win in the first tournament of the season is always a boost. We’re going to Colorado in two weeks. That’s going to be a much more physical, highly-competitive tournament. This is just a warm-up for us, so hopefully we’re just going to get better,” Cribb said, ahead of the trip, which will be followed by the Rugby Americas North Sevens tournament in Barbados in September.
Mona Titans returned to Cayman after a third-place finish last year. Veteran player Renaldo Wade said it’s always a joy to make the trip for a weekend of rugby.
“It was good for us to come out here and perform against these guys. We came in second but it was a great one,” he said. “Just the atmosphere, the fellowship and the people. How can you resist that? The brotherhood is awesome.”
Cribb agreed: “It was a great day of rugby…it was an action-packed day, the guys loved it and the atmosphere was great.”
