Neveril, Wilkinson win again on youth tennis circuit
- Updated: 25 May 2017
Jakub Neveril picked up his third tournament of the PWC Junior Tennis Circuit over the weekend, while top female player, Jade Wilkinson won for the third time during 2017.
A total of 27 players competed across three age divisions in the latest event, which was played 20-21 May at the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman after play was rained out on Friday, 19 May.
In the 14-and-under division, top-seeded Jakub Neveril won against Sebastian Bjuroe 6-3, 6-4. Neveril has won his age bracket at every tournament on the PWC circuit this season. Bjuroe had a great match in the semi-finals with Willow Wilkinson, who ended up winning third place against Zach Jackson 6-3, 6-2.
Among the 18-and-under players, number one seed Jade Wilkinson and second seed Lauren Fullerton had an exciting finals match-up, with Wilkinson winning in two sets: 7-6(5), 6-1. Third place went to Jake Booker with a win over Alexander Claybourn 6-4, 6-3.
In the 10 and under age group, Kahj Clarke, who came from Jamaica just for the tournament, took the title coming from a set down to win in a tough three-setter against Digby Robinson. The final score was 5-7, 6-2, 10-8. Third place went to Jake Fagan, who won in a close match against Albert Berksoy 5-7, 6-3, 10-6.
With Friday’s play rained out, the first-round matches were moved to Saturday, with the 3rd/4th place, semi-finals, and finals on Sunday.
“Under very windy conditions, the kids produced a fabulous display of tennis,” tournament organisers said in a statement. “Overall the quality of tennis was great to watch.”
The Tennis Federation of the Cayman Islands hosts the next PwC tournament on 25-27 August at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.
