Pearson’s presence felt for Scholars

In England, the FA Cup is a place where a player’s legacy can be sealed with a big performance. Though the lights may not shine as bright on the pitches in Cayman, sometimes a player can let his game do the talking to keep his name fresh on the minds of coaches, teammates and opponents.

Scholars International sports an impressive line-up of attacking midfielders and forwards with solid ability. Though others often get the glory, a constant force is that of Rodrick Pearson and the 25-year-old forward made his presence felt in his club’s first round match against rivals Roma United on 28 May.

Pearson scored twice in the first half (18’, 28’) to put his side out front, before completing his hat-trick 13 minutes into the second half to lead his team to a comfortable 5-0 win. His performance also secured his name as the Cayman Sports Buzz Footballer of the Week presented by Futbolista World.

“I think the team did well [overall]. We came together as a team, fought very hard, we didn’t give up and we distributed the football the way we were supposed to do,” Pearson said, adding that he was pleased with his own performance.

Did it mean more to help Scholars dominate Roma, which has played them tough all season?

“Yeah. Every team we play, we bring out the best in those teams. Sometimes we go and we watch a game before and see how they perform and it’s nothing compared to how they perform against us. It’s like we are the Barcelona of Cayman – everybody wants to beat us,” he said.

Pearson also played well against Latinos.

Pearson also had defenders on their heels during Scholars’ mid-week clash against Latinos in the Cayman Premier League but was unable to add to his tally (though a shot of his hit the cross bar and bounced back into play), as the sides played to a scoreless draw.

At a brief presentation, he was awarded a certificate, a Futbolista World sports shirt, and a gift certificate to be used toward new gear at Futbolista World. He has also been entered into a draw to win an additional prize from Futbolista World at the end of the season.

Each week, Cayman Sports Buzz will select a player for the Footballer of the Week honour based on their performance in any of the following leagues: Cayman Premier League, CIFA Women’s Premier League, CIFA First Division, CIFA youth leagues and the CUC Primary Football League/Girls Primary Football League.

At the end of the season, Cayman Sports Buzz will be presenting a more substantial award to the Footballer of the Year.
