Poised for battle to the finish
- Updated: 6 March 2018
Scholars International pressed forward with its undefeated run atop the table, while defending champions Bodden Town FC lost their third game in a row in the latest round of matches in the 2017/18 CIFA Men’s Premier League. With Roma United also winning, it’s shaping up to be a battle to the finish with only a handful of games left on the schedule.
Tigers FC 1-5 Scholars Int’l
Playing at the Annex Saturday, 3 March, Scholars picked up their eighth consecutive win with a 5-1 win over Tigers FC behind a hat-trick from Rolly Bodden (30’, 64’ 77’). Damalay Howelle (15’) and Brandon Ebanks (45+) added the other two scores for Scholars, while Jake Bennett Rivera (60’) ensured Tigers would not be shutout.
Scholars have taken maximum points from all of their games, except a 1-1 draw with Cayman Athletic on 22 October. They have a three-point gap on Roma United atop the table with three games left on the schedule, and a game in hand over Roma. Scholars upcoming games are against Sunset FC, Academy SC, and Bodden Town FC.
Sunset FC 1-3 Roma United
As mentioned, Roma United have kept things tight, coming from behind to beat Sunset FC at Ed Bush Sports Complex on 4 March. Stephen Tatum put Sunset ahead in the 13th minute before Roma battled back with a pair of goals from Demar James (19’, 32’) to take a 2-1 halftime lead. Dexter Monroe added another in the 67th minute to seal the deal.
Bouncing back from a loss to Scholars last week that created separation at the summit, Roma kept pace and are three points back. However, they’ve got one game less to close the gap with two potentially difficult fixtures ahead against Academy SC (11 March) and Bodden Town FC (8 April).
Academy SC 6-3 North Side SC
In a testy affair, Academy out-gunned North Side in a game featuring nine goals from eight players. Scoring for Academy were: Romario Dixon (12’35’), Jermaine Wilson (pk 30’), Yannick Solomon (73’), Yolande Plummer (78’), and Jonah Ebanks (85’). Finding the back of the net for North Side were: (Michael Panton 45+’), Christopher Kerr (pk 52’), and Jamie Demn (53’).
Cayman Brac FC 0-5 Elite SC
Elite extended their winning streak to five games with a comfortable win on a trip to the Sister Island. Wesley Robinson scored twice (13’, 23’), with other goals coming from Christopher Reeves (14’), Santangelo Bush (18’) and Kaled Giron (87’). With the win, Elite remained in fourth but pulled within a point of inactive Latinos FC.
Bodden Town FC 3-4 George Town SC
A run of misery continues for the defending champions as they prepare for the CONCACAF Caribbean Shield next month in the Dominican Republic.
Tex Whitelocke put George Town ahead in the 18th minute and the 1-0 lead was preserved going into the break. Five minutes after play resumed, Tevon Levien found the equaliser. But it was not long before George Town took the advantage again when Junior Welcome scored in the 52nd minute and again in the 63rd. Levien got a brace in the 72nd minute to pull back within a goal. Whitelocke added an insurance tally in the 86th to double the lead. Charlo McLean scored for Bodden Town in the 89th minute but George Town held on for the one-goal win.
With no chance of retaining the title, Bodden Town will look to steady the ship ahead of the regional tournament in April.
Cayman Athletic 1-1 Future SC
Scorers: Cayman Athletic – Jordan McLean (19’), Future Maikel Ebanks (56’)
Standings as of 6 March
*Note: Each team plays only 13 games this season – once against each opponent*
