Saunders wins Breeze Fusion 5K
- Updated: 8 November 2016
A local non-profit and two government primary schools each benefitted from donations of $2,000 raised from the Breeze Fusion 5K Run/Walk held Saturday, 5 November, 2016, which was won by Jason Saunders.
Saunders crossed the finish line in 17 minutes, 29.92 seconds, nearly two minutes ahead of his closest competitor, Catherine Conway (19:03.78) – the first female finisher. 345 Athletics Club member, 12 year-Levi Superville was the next fastest with a time of 19:22.45.
Saunders is having a good run of form as he gets set for the half-marathon in December. He won the recent Fidelity Fun Run Series.
The National Council of Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), East End Primary School, and the Edna Moyle Primary School in North Side were each given $2,000 from funds raised.
In a show of support, other school teams came from George Town Primary, Savannah Primary, Prospect Primary and Bodden Primary. Principals, teachers and MLAs joined students, alongside runners and walkers from the public – and from private-sector companies.
“I am so overwhelmed at the outpouring of support we received from the community at large which made our event such a huge success! I’m looking forward to next year’s event being even bigger and better,” Radio Cayman’s Deputy Director Paulette Conolly-Bailey said.
Radio Cayman Director Norma McField thanked all who participated or supported the event, noting that there were over 300 registrants for the 10th anniversary event, which was held at the picturesque Smith Barcadere. She also applauded the volunteers from the Cayman Islands Red Cross, the Lion’s Club, and the Leo Club of University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI).
Corporate sponsorships came from Car City, Water Authority, Cayman National Bank, JTC Group, Ogier, Cayman Weekly, Seaboard Marine, Roma United and Wata.
Additional sponsorship of students and their schools came from Ministers Osbourne Bodden and Wayne Panton, as well as from MLAs Ezzard Miller and Arden McLean – who also participated in the 5k.
Other participants included Deputy Governor Franz Manderson and his wife Nuvia, Acting Commissioner of Police Anthony Ennis, Deputy Commissioner of Police Kurt Walton, Cabinet Secretary Samuel Rose and Director of Cabinet’s Policy Coordination Unit Robert Lewis.
