Stafford to play for Caribbean title
- Updated: 15 August 2017
Top Cayman Islands squash player Cameron Stafford is one step away from being crowned Caribbean singles champion.
Stafford faces Chris Binnie of Jamaica in the singles finals of the 2017 senior Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Championships in St Vincent and the Grenadines Tuesday evening (15 August).
The match-up features the top two seeds: Binnie is the highest seed and seven-time champion, with Stafford the second seed.
Stafford has not dropped a game on his way to the finals. He beat Joe Chapman of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) 11-9, 11-4, 11-5 in the semi-finals on Monday evening.
He won against Jamaica’s Bruce Burrowes in the quarterfinals, with earlier wins over Bryant Cumberbatch and Khamal Cumberbatch – both of Barbados.
Meantime, Cayman’s other top male player, Julian Jervis had to withdraw from his quarterfinal match due to injury.
Jake Kelly lost in the semi-finals of the men’s consolation event, after advancing to the round of 32 in the main draw before falling to Trinidad and Tobago’s Collin Ramasra in a tough five-game match.
Sean Murphy lost in the opening round to Jamaica’s Jonathan Walker.
CaymanSportsBuzz.com will have an update on the women’s competition later Tuesday.
