Marius Acker won the men’s Olympic distance of the 2016 Cayman Islands Triathlon presented by Cayman First, while Christine Ramsay took the women’s title in a tight finish last Sunday, 6 November.
Acker completed the combined course of a 1,500-metre swim, 24.8-mile bike ride and 6.2-mile run in two hours, 12 minutes and 33 seconds. Stuart Bray finished just under a minute later (2:13:31) to claim second prize. Patrick Harfield was third in 2:15:56.
In Acker’s absence, Bray had won the Jaguar Land Rover Stroke & Stride Series in August and the Cayman Islands Duathlon in September.
The women’s event came down to the final lap, when Christine Ramsey pulled away from Michelle Bailey and Nadine Gray to win the event. Ramsey finished in 2:39.28, Bailey in 2:40:16 and Gray in 2:41:36 to take the top three spots.
Also contested was the shorter sprint distance. The men’s title was won by Marius Deysel. He finished the 750-metre swim, 12-mile bike ride and three-mile run in one hour and 14 minutes. JP Hanekon was second in 1:15:14 and Johann Prinsloo third in 1:15:31.
Marlene West dominated the women’s sprint, winning in 1:23:18, nearly three minutes ahead of Rebecca Wall (1:26:09) and Elena Testori (1:27:39).
There were nearly 200 athletes competing in this year’s event.
