Walton breaks records to win Pan Am U20 gold
- Updated: 21 July 2017
Jamal Walton won gold for the Cayman Islands in the 400m at the Pan American U20 Championships in Peru on Friday, 21 July, with a new national record of 44.99 seconds.
Walton’s run also broke the Pan Am U20 championship record of 45.14 seconds that was set by America Obea Moore in 1995. With this latest mark, Walton has qualified for next month’s World Championships in London.
The 18-year-old has been in fine form for the 2017 season. His latest run outstrips the previous national best of 45.70 he ran in April. He also set a new Cayman Islands record in the 200m to 20.57 at the same high school championships while running for Miramar High School in Florida.
In June, Walton won 200m and 400m gold medals at the NatWest Island Games in the Swedish island of Gotland. He also won 200m gold and 400m silver at the Flow CARIFTA Games in Curacao in April.
He has also landed All-American honours for his performances representing his Florida high school.
Walton runs in the 200m on Saturday (22 July).
