Young sailors to qualify for world championships
- Updated: 15 August 2017
Young Caymanian sailors are being given the chance to qualify for the 2017 Youth World Sailing Championships in Sanya, China this December.
The Cayman Islands Sailing Club is preparing to host a laser radial qualifier on Sunday 3 September. The event is open to Caymanians under the age of 19 years on 31 December 2017 (born after 31 December 1998).
The top overall male and top overall female will be selected to represent the Cayman Islands at the 9-16 December competition that will feature the top young sailors from around the world. This will be the 47th edition of the championships.
Last year, Allena Rankine and Shane McDermot competed at the Youth World Sailing Championships in Auckland, New Zealand.
Rankine finished 39th out of 47 competitors in the girls’ laser radial after having mixed results on the water. Her best finish of 16th place came in her opening race.
McDermot finished 43rd from a field of 57 boys in the laser radial. He had two top-25 finishes in his nine races in New Zealand.
